Carriage Drivers

About 30 licensed tour guides are employed as mule-drawn carriage drivers at Royal Carriages. Together, our team has more than 160 years of professional tour guide experience. After rigorous applications and tests administered by New Orleans City Hall, carriage drivers obtain two separate 2-year working permits allowing them to work professionally as a tour guide and carriage driver. Prior to driving carriages, many tour guides worked as former teachers, historians, actors, paramedics, chefs, engineers, firemen, vet assistants, military, etc. Today, carriage drivers enjoy spending their work days beside a mule, enlightening travelers about our beautiful city in the beautiful sunshine.

Supervisors

Sitting underneath a red umbrella along the fence of Jackson Square, you'll find the on-site supervisor working to manage our 13 carriages. He or she is responsible for checking in all ticket reservations and making sure the standards of quality are always being upheld.

Stable Hands

Stable hands ensure the health of Royal Carriage draft mules by providing outstanding care daily. Daily responsibilities include feeding, cleaning stalls, and completing other stable-related tasks with enthusiasm

Street Sweep

As good neighbors, Royal Carriages makes a daily effort to attend to the accidental mule waste in the French Quarter. Our Street Sweep Team is always patrolling, sweeping, and providing residents and businesses with odor neutralizing products free of charge.

We loved this. Our driver, Thiebaud, regaled us with historic tales of Napoleon, Joan of Arc, Andrew Jackson, Tennessee Williams, Lee Harvey Oswald, and, of course, Richard Simmons. Why is it that the locals always bring up Richard Simmons? We also heard about the Great Fire, the Second Great Fire, the Big Hurricane, the Next Big Hurricane, and the flood. Seems that God has done his best to take down this city, but the locals aren't having any of that. Such a relaxing/educating/romantic way to see the French Quarter.
